Broncos-Raiders in the GAME OF THE WEEK AND In the ending of the season so far: In the battle for first the Raiders jump out to an early lead from the opening offensive series... but couldn't keep it. Despite repeated throws into triple coverage, Griese and the Broncos actually managed to hold it close. For the first time in the year, Oakland ran the ball, monopolizing the time completely. Then, down by 3- with under a minute left- Rice came through with a clutch TD, leaving 20 seconds on the clock for the Broncos to figure out a gameplan. Griese continued to be confused by the defense, and two pass plays into double coverage left the Broncos down by a TD with 12 seconds left in the game. Griese, a 3 time player of the week, was not fazed however, and passed deep... proceeding to find Smith open for a 40 yard completion. (Wr) Smith ran toward the sidelines with 14 seconds left, aiming to stop the clock- when he looked around and realized, very belatedly, that with 5 seconds left he had completely beat the defense. Then, with 1 second on the clock he ran it in for the winning TD. In the end, it was that 86 yard Hail Mary to Smith that made the difference, and led to the Broncos narrow lead as division leader over the Raiders. Whether they manage to keep their lead is something that only time and the fickle fate of the NFL season will tell. (and on a sidenote- for all of you that know what im talking bout- i will try to be less violent towards the end of the season. Ill just keep the pillows more convenient.)
